Writing for the web

Writing for the web

Everyone strives to present their business in the best possible way, and there is no better way to do this than by using good copy to get your key messages across to your readers. Engaging copy will make a difference to how long someone remains on your site, and it will be the main factor in deciding if someone wants to do business with you or not.

Copy for the web has to be punchy, engaging and quite informal in its style in order to relate to its readers and subsequently draw them in. I have worked as a copywriter and editor for the web for more than four years and have built up experience in digital marketing and search engine optimisation – two of the key areas to building up a successful online business.

Take a look at my list of useful tips below, which can be applied when writing for web. If you like what you read, give me a call and let me apply my skills and knowledge to deliver excellent copy to your business.

Be concise
Make your point quickly and concisely – people have incredibly short attention spans when surfing the net so you need to capture their interest fast.

Make your copy stand out
Most people tend to skim read online so keeping your copy short and succinct will help grab their attention – breaking up your text by using bullet points, headings, subheadings and bold font will make your writing more plausible.

Choose content wisely
Make sure that your copy is useful to the reader – provide them with blogs and guides on a subject rather than a detailed company history.

SEO is the key
Search engine optimisation is a key component to writing online copy and it is the main way to get your website to rank higher on search engines. Write a list of key search words and phrases and make sure these are worked into your copy in a creative and interesting way.

Calls to action
Invite people to contact you wherever possible which means writing your contact name and number for your company in as many places as you can. You won’t get calls unless people know where to find you so make it as easy as possible for them. Including a link to your email address is simple way to gain direct enquiries.

Links
Include links to other areas of your site to make sure that people get the maximum amount of information they can to make an informed decision. Showing that your site has good, relevant content adds to its appeal.
